Monday Musings for the New Year

New Year GraphicsHappy New Year!

It's that time when everyone's popping open the bubbly, packing away the decorations, and making resolutions of all sorts. Long ago I made a resolution to never make "resolutions" per se, but I do like to set goals for the coming year.

Here are my 2013 writing goals:

1. Spend more time on the blog.

2. Release a new book every 1-2 months.

Ironically, one of my goals last year was to STOP spending time on the blog for a while so I could focus on releasing more books. But I missed it!  So this year I'm back and ready to kill two birds with two stones. Be on the lookout for more recipes on Tuesdays, six-sentence excerpts on Sundays, and some other surprises and guests.

On the writing front, I have a new series of MM/werewolf tales in the works, along with the final two books in the Lone Wolves of Shay Falls series. I also have a stand alone fantasy and a contemporary novel that I hope to see release sometime over the next several months. I haven't been writing short stories for a while since I've been so busy working on all these books, but I do have a few ideas skittering around the far recesses of my brain. And speaking of brains, I'm getting ready to help edit my husband's first full-length novel, a zombie book he wrote during NaNoWriMo. It's a far cry from his usual short erotica, but a fun ride full of humor and wicked action nonetheless. I couldn't be more proud!

That's it for now! Wherever you are and whatever you hope for, I wish you a gracious and fulfilling New Year. Farewell 2012.

Hunt, Feed, Mate-Six Sentence Sunday

Some of you may have heard the announcement that the official Six Sentence Sunday is ending in January. Be that as it may, I will keep posting my own snippets on select Sundays.

This week's is from my work in progress, PETER AND THE WOLF (edit: a Siren bestseller! BUY LINK)

He stared at his reflection, expecting to see his face morph into something unnatural at any moment. He felt unnatural, like an alien transplanted into another body. Soon, he would run free with the night. He would hunt. Feed. Mate.

Chains and Unwelcome Visitors-Six Sentence Sunday, NaNo Style

It's the final Sunday of NaNoWriMo...one more Six from my WIP...

(On select Sundays, I'll be sharing a six-sentence excerpt from one of my works in progress, as part of Six Sentence Sunday.)

From my second NaNoWriMo book this year, PETER AND THE WOLF (edit: a Siren bestseller! BUY LINK)

“Who the fuck’s there?” Peter called out, pulling hard on his shackles.

A man he' d never seen before appeared in the doorway, filling the space with his bulk. His liquid black eyes flashed with a supernatural fire as they swept over the sight of the naked man chained to Jarred’s bed.

The smile that slid up half of a craggy, wide face was far less than pleasant. “Well,” the man said, “this isn’t quite how I expected to find you.” The eyes focused on Peter’s exposed cock as he added, “I must say, you have proven yourself to be one surprise after the other.”

Week4 Favorite Lines-NaNoWriMo 2012

This is the final week of NaNoWriMo, and the last week of my daily favorite lines written posts. (Warning: Some adult language and/or situations)

Week 4 favorite lines:

11/23 “How the fuck did he manage this?” he asked, lifting the end of the chain to examine it. “I’ve never torn free of these chains.”

11/24 “You left him alone and shackled to your bed, and you’re bitching that he should have been more thoughtful of your feelings?”

11/25 “Yeah, as a matter of fact, I'm way out of my mind.” He stared down at the wolf below. “Ever since the moment Peter walked into that conference room.”

11/26 The wolf Peter’s eyes glowed with moon fire, and his snout twitched with interest while he sniffed the air.

11/27 “I should have been there to keep you safe,” Jarred went on, his heart hammering against his sternum. “But I was so busy rushing off to play hero that I failed at being one.”

...Well, I sadly have no more "daily lines" to post after the 27th, due to having been ill for a couple of weeks and off work (writing and otherwise) for several days. But I completed the challenge with 61,453 words, so I guess that's not too shabby for ducking out on the last three days of NaNo!

Congrats to all my fellow NaNo participants who beat the challenge this year, and for those who participated without crossing 50k I say, we're all still winners! Here's looking forward to next year.

You'd Better Be Ready-Six Sentence Sunday NaNo Style--Week 3

It's back! On select Sundays, I'll be sharing a six-sentence excerpt from one of my works in progress, as part of Six Sentence Sunday.

From my second NaNoWriMo book this year, PETER AND THE WOLF (edit: a Siren bestseller! BUY LINK)

Peter actually thought he heard a tiny growl from Jarred’s throat, or perhaps it was from his father’s. A glitter of something wild flashed in Jarred’s eyes, and then as suddenly as he had taken hold of Peter, he released his grip.

Jarred laid both hands against the wall on either side of Peter’s head while he appeared to study every detail of his face.

“Everything in both our lives has just changed,” Jarred said. His voice sounded strange, a lower, huskier version of the businesslike tenor from before. “You’d better be ready for it.”

Week 3 Favorite Lines, NaNoWriMo 2012

It's the 3rd week of November is National Novel Writing Month, and we're still busy pounding keys at our house.

My personal favorite lines written each day continue for PETER AND THE WOLF, the eroticMM/shifter romance I'm writing for NaNo.

Week 3 favorite lines:

11/16 “My son, forever the battering ram against doors that are welded shut. But not even you can beat down death.”

11/17 A fever gripped Peter sometime during the night, burning through him like a wildfire that was almost as consuming as the dreams of Jarred Wellington that accompanied it.

11/18 ...(I crossed 50k today!!) ...Peter closed his eyes and saw the forest, an image of the two of them running free and naked until he captured Jarred and pinned him, erect and panting, against a tree.

11/19 “You’re not just a hot stud with a new and emerging dark side,” Jarred said through clenched teeth. “You’re the bearer of really fucked news for my family. A harbinger of death.

11/20 And if the chains built into the headboard hadn’t been installed for wild sex, Peter wasn’t sure he wanted to know what they were used for.

11/21 “Oh, no, you’re not an animal,” he said, grabbing his clothes off the floor. “Not at all.”

11/22 With an ease that was both surprising and yet somehow expected, Peter hopped the rear wall and disappeared into the night.

Two Magnetic Opposites-Six Sentence Sunday, NaNo Style

It's back! On select Sundays, I'll be sharing a six-sentence excerpt from one of my works in progress, as part of Six Sentence Sunday.
WARNING: THIS WEEK'S SIX CONTAINS ADULT LANGUAGE

From my NaNoWriMo book, NATURE'S BOUNTY:

The mood in the car had shifted, along with something in the air between them. He recognized the glimmer of fire in her piercing blue eyes, and it wasn’t merely a result of the erotic chemistry that had failed to dim despite their crazy circumstances. She was, for the time being, no longer the lawbreaking captive he was doing his civic duty by returning to justice. They were a team now, two magnetic opposites clutching together for a common cause. He just hoped he wasn’t making as big a mistake with this decision as when he’d gone with his instinct to fuck her on the table.

Week 2 Favorite Lines-NaNoWriMo 2012

Onto Week 2 of National Novel Writing Month!

Each day, I've been posting my personal favorite lines written for my NaNo project, an erotic romance titled NATURE'S BOUNTY.

(WARNING: some lines may contain adult language and/or situations.)

Week 2 favorite lines:

11/8  “She’s stealing my fucking car,” he said, racing back to the room with his pants still flapped open. “Miss I’m-not-a-lawbreaker just committed grand theft auto.”

11/9 She curled her lip at him. “You just used ‘good’ and ‘lawyer’ in the same sentence. That’s funny.”

11/10 “I’m looking for a surveillance wire, sweetheart. Not a hard-on.”

11/11 “It occurs to me that while I’ve made you scream in the passenger seat, across the gear knob, and laid out in the back, I’ve never bent you over the hood of a car before.”

11/12 “Of course I knew he was guilty. Innocent people don’t go around paying off guys like me to work around the system."

11/13 The van roared up just as Benny and Nate were crossing the street. Cops in riot gear tumbled out like clowns from a Volkswagen, and all were amazingly light-footed while they gestured at Nate to hang back.

11/14 “That felt good,” Nate said. “Although I’d have liked to punctuate my sentence with a fist in his face.”

11/15 Jarred’s entire being was somehow filling the room, filling Peter until there was nothing else but the two of them.

Now Available--DISPLACED COWBOYS

DISPLACED COWBOYS

Book 5 of the LONE WOLVES OF SHAY FALLS SERIES, a spinoff based on the bestselling HER FULL MOON COWBOYS
November 5 2012
Siren Publishing Menage Amour
Western | Erotic | M/M , M/M/F | Double Penetration | Anal Sex | Bondage/Spanking

http://bookstrand.com/displaced-cowboys

About the LONE WOLVES series:

They are cowboys torn from their livelihood after a fateful bite changed their destinies forever. When their pack is disbanded by a new alpha, the lone wolves are forced to roam the woods of Shay Falls with no way to return to the ranch life they once knew. Each must find a male pack mate of their own—and a female mate to hold that bond together.

About DISPLACED COWBOYS:

Terra is having a serious crisis of judgment. First, she inexplicably runs away from her 21st birthday party. Then, she not only picks up a cowboy hitchhiker, but rescues a second cowboy lying by the road after a strange wolf attack.

Suffering from a mysterious fever that has her experiencing all-new meanings of the word “hot,” she takes Connor and Nash to a motel room where she learns a shocking secret—her cowboy strangers are werewolves.

The hot strangers show her that the biggest freedom of all is in being bound, but moving into the future means dealing with the past. And when the trio's passion is threatened by a huntress set on revenge, Terra and her werewolf heroes must fight for survival in order to fulfill their desire to be bound.

Rated R Excerpt:

Connor strode down the sidewalk toward the end of the long, one-story row of motel rooms. Terra's eyes fell to the way his ass twitched with a hot swagger, and then she launched herself after him.

“Where are we going?”

“We have to hunt before Nash wakes up.” She sped up, and Connor shot her a sideways glance. “And when I say ‘we,’ I mean me.”

“Hunting? I don’t know how to hunt. Wouldn’t it be better if I stayed in the room? Nash might need something.”

“Oh, he’ll need somethin’, but he ain’t gettin’ it from you. You’re safer with me.”

“The man’s sleeping and hardly in any shape to try anything. Besides, you don’t even have any weapons.” Except for the extremely lethal one she’d groped beneath his belt.

“That nap Nash is takin’ won’t last much longer. He’ll wake when the night comes, and matters will be much worse than what you saw by the roadside.”

“You really have an issue with nighttime, don’t you? Are you afraid of the dark?”

They rounded the end of the building, and Connor strode with purpose toward the woods behind the motel.

“What happens at nightfall?” she persisted.

“Full moon.”

She crunched through rocks and dirt, half running to keep up with his long strides until he stopped suddenly just outside a line of pine trees. “So?”

He sighed. “If you insist on stayin’ here for this, you may as well understand right now what you’re dealin’ with.”

For the second time that day, Connor peeled his shirt over his head, and she felt the moisture in her mouth evaporate.

“Okay,” she said with more of a dry croak than she’d have liked. “What am I dealing with?” Besides a hormone invasion that could take down a high school gym.

He shot her a grim smile. “I’m not what you’d call your average cowboy. Nash is about to join the club. There’s no easy way to tell you this, Terra. I have to show you.”

Her thoughts toggled between pornographic and medical possibilities for what he was about to reveal. How bad could it be, really? True, he certainly couldn’t be accused of being “average.” Ruggedly movie-star beautiful, maybe. Bizarre and puzzling, definitely. But average? Hell, no.

She clutched herself around the middle. “So, hit me with it already. Give up your mystery.”

He eyed her. “One condition first. If you’re gonna run, do not run to the room.”

She snorted. “You may have noticed I don’t jump and run easy, either.”

“Yeah. I’m gettin’ that.” His eyes failed to reflect the humor she was trying to inject. “I’m serious, though. That’s not where you wanna be.”

An odd, faraway expression crossed his features. “You didn’t find me by accident, Terra. You’re special, too, in your own way. You were meant to be a part of this secret and to keep it. Don’t be scared of me. I won’t hurt you.”

“I’m not scared.” Which was probably one of the crazier admissions she’d made today.

Still, something in the way he said the words prompted her to step back and hug herself tighter around the middle. She could run, if it came to that. Maybe not as fast these days, but her car was close by, and the keys were in her pocket.

Connor’s eyes began to shimmer with that odd, golden flame again. She cocked her head and stared at the mesmerizing golden gleam, unable to drag her eyes away. A low growl came from his throat, and a strange aura came alive just around the sides of his face. It gave his skin a crawling, rippling appearance. Then, gray hair began sprouting on his face and body. His growl deepened as somehow, impossibly, his whole face began to droop. It looked like his jaw had come unhinged and was sliding down toward his chest. Her breath caught when he leaned forward, and with a gruff barking sound, his body began to shrink.

Happiness About to Fade-Six Sentence Sunday-NaNo Style

It's back! On select Sundays, I'll be sharing a six-sentence excerpt from one of my works in progress, as part of Six Sentence Sunday.

WARNING: THIS WEEK'S SIX CONTAINS ADULT SITUATIONS AND LANGUAGE

I wasn't sure I wanted to do a six since I've already been posting daily lines from my NaNoWriMo book NATURE'S BOUNTY, but what the heck! Here's this week's six:

She headed for a short hallway, but turned before she got there. “By the way, I’d love to see the actual job you came here to do, if you want to show me when I get back.”

He sincerely doubted she was going to love it in the slightest. He pasted on a smile and took a moment to study the lines of her face as it was right then. She seemed fairly happy, and she was looking at him like he was still someone she’d just been fucked well and proper by. That was an expression he wouldn’t be seeing again, certainly not from her.

Week 1 Favorite Lines-NaNoWriMo 2012

It's that time again...November is National Novel Writing Month. The challenge: write a novel (or 50,000 words of one) in 30 days. This is my 7th year participating, and my husband's 1st.

During November, I'll be posting my personal favorite lines written each day on my NaNo project, an erotic romance titled NATURE'S BOUNTY.

Week 1 favorite lines:

11/1 "Women are trouble in high heels--and you’ve got the wild look of a man who hasn’t gotten laid in far too long."

11/2 The scent of marijuana hit Nate less than a block from his destination, but it failed to distract him from the depressing math he was doing to calculate how long it had been since he'd gotten laid.

11/3 She sank to her knees in front of him while he gritted his teeth and tried to cling to what little flotsam of morals he had left.

11/4 A sure-fire cure for intoxication was getting jumped by a bounty hunter--she felt a lot more sober now than when he’d first waltzed in with balloons and a hidden agenda.

11/5 “I should have tied those balloons to your nuts and floated you off over the ocean.”

11/6 Plans began swirling in his head and clicking into place, although the plans of what he would not be doing next solidified much faster than what he should do instead.

11/7 “By the way,” she said as they headed for the checkout, “you’re welcome for the ongoing use of my tits as a male distraction device.”

Your Master Should Exploit You-Six Sentence Sunday

It's back, just in time to rev up for my NaNoWriMo daily favorite lines in November.

On select Sundays I'll be sharing a six-sentence excerpt from one of my works in progress, as part of Six Sentence Sunday.
WARNING: THIS WEEK'S SIX CONTAINS ADULT SITUATIONS AND LANGUAGE

This week's six is from BOUND TO HER MASTER, a capture fantasy featuring hot demigods who practice ancient traditions of bondage.
Excerpt:

"Few men in this realm can look at a bearing female without their cocks rising in salute of such ripe, tempting curves," the midwife said. "There would be no better time for your Master to use you to exact promises from noblemen of influence—especially members of the ruling panel."

Anger rose in Ti-Hana's chest. "So, what, you’re saying Lord Stepanyan should pimp me out so I can help him win the high seat?"

"It would be the greatest service you could perform for him. Or did you think your only value as his sex slave would be in learning the most secret and honored techniques for spurting his god seed?"

Chocolate-Pumpkin Fudge with Peanut Butter Swirls

*A Too Yummy Tuesday Favorite!*
On select Tuesdays I'll share delicious recipes either inspired by my books or that are just plain delicious!

Today's recipe is dedicated to all those who are getting ready to participate in this year's NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). Writing 50,000 words in 30 days is no mean feat, and easy, fast and delicious goodies are a must! Along with caffeine and a side order of possibly insanity, but that's another story.

While I'm busy planning my "NaNo" book project in October, I also like to dig out some recipes to get a head start. I found this recipe, which features reduced fat and calories (yay!), through the Hungry Girl website. I give you:

CHOCOLATE-PUMPKIN FUDGE WITH PEANUT BUTTER SWIRLS

Yum!! Don't overbake these...and I like to occasionally drizzle with a couple tbsp melted dark or milk chocolate or caramel. The directions say to use an 8X8 pan, but all I have are 9X9's and they turn out fine.

Ingredients:

2 cups canned pure pumpkin
1 box Betty Crocker Fudge Brownies Mix (the 18.3-oz. Family Size box)
2 tbsp. Better 'n Peanut Butter, room temperature

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Combine pumpkin with the brownie mix in a large bowl; stir until smooth (do not add anything else).  Spray a small baking pan (8" X 8" work best - no larger!) with nonstick cooking spray and pour in the mixture.  Spoon 2 tbsp. of Better 'n Peanut Butter (room temperature) on top and use a knife to swirl peanut butter around. Cook for approximately 35 minutes.  The batter will remain very thick and fudgy, and it should look undercooked.  Remove from oven.  Cover with aluminum foil and let cool in fridge for a couple of hours.  Cut into 36 squares and serve.

Sugar-Frosted Grapes

It's Too Yummy Tuesday!
On select Tuesdays I'll share delicious recipes either inspired by my books or that are just plain delicious!

Today's recipe is inspired by my current work-in-progress, BOUND TO HER MASTER. A woman accidentally transports herself to a realm of sexy demigods who have some specific and rather shocking uses for an unclaimed human female. As this tale was inspired by the setting in IMMORTAL MENAGE, one of the foods highly featured in that story will be seen again here--and it's definitely a snack fit for the gods. So I give you:

SUGAR-FROSTED GRAPES

Absolutely delicious, and a decadent dessert that is great to serve guests--whether or not they happen to be immortal! I've adapted this recipe after searching out several versions on Google. This one most closely resembles one found on Yahoo Voices. I like to make these out of grapes that aren't quite sweet enough to snack on plain, so these tend to get made on the spur when we discover our latest grape purchase is on the sour side. The tang of those grapes against the sweet, sugary coating is tres magnifique!

Ingredients:

Approximately 1 lb of seedless grapes, washed and dried well. (I like black or red grapes for this, but any will do.) For a special presentation, leave these clumped together right on their stems. I don't do one entire pound on a stem, but separate the stems into several portions. Lovely!
2 egg whites
1/3 cup of granulated sugar

ALTERNATELY, to make these grapes without using raw egg products, substitute 2 tbsp corn syrup and 2 tsp water for the egg whites.

Pour sugar into a bowl large enough to accommodate the grapes in bunches, if you've decided to do it that way, or individually and then set aside. In another bowl, beat egg whites until foamy (OR mix together corn syrup and water). I will whip out my mixer for this step, but a whisk by hand can do the job fine. Roll or dip the grapes in the egg or corn syrup mixture until coated well. This step is much quicker if you've left bunches on their stems. Just ensure they all get coated. Hold over the bowl just long enough to drip off the excess, then dip into the bowl of sugar until all grapes are frosted well. Place grapes on a wire rack set over a cookie sheet and let dry. I like to do this in the freezer so they are super cold, almost crunchy.

Now for the fun part! Display your bunches of frosted grapes on a nice serving tray and enjoy! (According to my characters, this is best done while lying half-naked on a fur rug--preferably one that's been imported from the Joontang realm.)

Microwave Potato Chips (Really! And Healthier)

It's Too Yummy Tuesday!
It's back! On select Tuesdays I'll share delicious recipes either inspired by my books or that are just plain delicious!

Today's recipe has become the new favorite snack at our house! It's super easy, and I was surprised to find how well it works!

MICROWAVE POTATO CHIPS

That's right...crispy, golden potato chips right from the microwave! Yumtacular and healthier than packaged, sodium-laden varieties--and no heating up the oven or using the messy deep fryer!

Ingredients:
4 medium-sized russet potatoes
2 Tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp salt

Scrub and peel potatoes. Using a mandolin or slicer, slice potatoes about 1/8-inch thick. (Thin is good, and it's hard to do this by hand...but if you've got no slicer and mad knife skills, fire away!)

In a bowl, combine oil and salt. Add in potato slices, toss well, and you're ready to cook.

You will need to do these in batches. Line a microwave-safe plate or tray that fits your oven with parchment paper and lay out potato slices in a single layer. Microwave full power for about 4 minutes until crispy and golden-brown. You'll have to watch these closely, so don't walk away! Microwaves vary, plus a thinner or thicker chip will alter cooking time.

Peel cooked chips carefully off parchment and repeat the process with remaining potato slices--you can reuse the same piece of parchment for subsequent batches.

That's it! Enjoy your warm, crispy chips plain or with a favorite dip. (If doing these as dipping chips, I recommend going a little thicker on the slices. Just don't make them too thick or they won't crisp up properly.)

She felt his cock pulse and swell, and Caleb gave her a tight, knowing smile while Stephen emptied himself inside her. Hot fluid gushed from her slit, and her eye contact with Caleb deepened, intensified. The intimacy between them was palpable, even though he wasn’t allowed to touch her. Stephen’s orgasm shook her deeply, too, and with his release came a wave of potent gratification. Her body had completed his to such great satisfaction, a thought that stirred her hunger until she was ready to attack Caleb with or without Stephen’s permission.

The notion barely had time to circulate in her thoughts before Stephen pulled out of her and pushed her legs off Caleb’s thighs so she was straddling his hips instead. Her sensitive, wet clit brushed the erection that pulsed stiffly between Caleb’s legs, and she let out a gasp.

“I find her most definitely compatible,” Stephen said to Caleb in between hoarse, ragged breaths, and he lifted her bottom and reached between her legs to grasp Caleb’s hard cock. “And you were quite obedient.”
Stephen guided Caleb against her cunt, and he pushed her hips down a little until the head of his cock shoved inside. She cried out, and Stephen moved his hand so she could fit Caleb in completely. She sat straight down on that throbbing shaft, and their still-clasped hands gripped each other’s hard enough to hurt when she took him all the way into her body.

“Oh, Rose,” Caleb said in a tone of disbelief. “Oh, God.”

The words required no explanation.

Her cunt clenched tightly around his dick, and she sat there, studying the way his glowing eyes and serious expression fluctuated in time to the throbbing and jerking between their legs. She expected Stephen to back away now, leave them to their time together, but that was far from what he did. He gripped her hips again, much the way he had while taking her from behind, and he moved her so that he was making her fuck Caleb’s cock. Up and down he slid her on that pulsing erection, her clit rubbing along his groin and belly with each motion. She got the idea quickly and took over, using her thigh muscles to drive herself down on Caleb, forcing him deeper inside. As long as his dick was, there was a sort of bottoming-out feel when she rode him this way, but she didn’t care. She wanted more and more of him inside her, wanted to take his entire being into hers and hold him there forever. Her clit had more primal and immediate needs, though, and she made a deliberate point of dragging her throbbing bud along his firm body as she rose up, and pushing it firmly to the base of his pelvis when she sat back down.

Stephen was still behind her, and he sharpened her pleasure by kissing his way up her spine until he was nuzzling her neck. Goose flesh broke out everywhere, and her whimpers of desire turned to lusty, shameless moans. His hands circled around to grab her breasts, pulling on her nipples while she rode the rugged, sexy cowboy beneath her. Nothing in her life had ever been this good, and something in the back of her mind panicked, whispering for her to stop before she crossed a line she would never be able to venture back over.

But it was already too late.

Stephen pressed his body close, where she could feel his cock hard and ready against her ass. Part of her was so firmly entrenched in the experience of joining with Caleb that she could barely register anything else. The other part desperately wanted her to turn around and make love to Stephen face-to-face.

How wrong was it for her to feel this way about two men simultaneously? Neither of them seemed troubled by it, but it just didn’t seem reasonable. How could passion flow so readily for both when it had never so trickled for anyone else? Yet there was no denying it. If it were anatomically possible for her to fuck them at the same time, she’d sure as hell do it.

Then she felt the tip of Stephen’s cock against her tight asshole. Despite what she’d just been thinking, she froze in panic.

“Don’t,” she whispered over her shoulder. “It wouldn’t be right.”

“Everything we do together is right,” he murmured, though he stopped pushing himself against her. “Are you afraid of the pain?”

She nodded.

“Did it hurt when I took your virginity?”

“No.” And the realization surprised her. She hadn’t given much thought to the fact that it should.

“A werewolf’s mate won’t feel that pain with their partners,” Caleb said, his eyes filled with reassurance. “It’ll be okay, Rose. But it’s your choice.”

Stephen ran a hand over her ass cheek. “Let me be part of your pleasure while you’re claimed.”

Zimply Zuperb Zucchini Bread

It's Too Yummy Tuesday!
On select Tuesdays I'll share delicious recipes either inspired by my books or that are just plain delicious!

Today's offering is the perfect way to use up that zucchini that has been taking over your summer vegetable garden!

ZIMPLY ZUPERB ZUCCHINI BREAD

A tweaked version of a recipe I found on allrecipes.com to reduce the fat. Super moist and rich! You can substitute chocolate chips, walnuts, or dried cranberry for the raisins. Makes 2 loaves.
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
3 eggs
1 cup applesauce (you can use vegetable oil instead, but this bumps up the calories and fat)
1 cup white sugar
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 tbsp vanilla extract
2 cups grated zucchini*
1 cup raisins

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease and flour two 8 x 4 inch loaf pans. Sift together flour, salt, baking powder, soda, and cinnamon in a bowl. Beat together eggs, applesauce, vanilla, and sugars in a large bowl. Add sifted ingredients to the creamed mixture and stir until well combined. Gently stir in zucchini and raisins until blended. Pour into loaf pans.

Bake for 50 to 60 minutes or until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack for 20 minutes. Remove bread from pan and let cool completely on rack.

*The zucchini should not be squeezed/patted dry in order to add to the dense, moist richness of this bread. However, I've found it best not to incorporate the liquid that collects at the bottom of the bowl used to grate the zucchini. I pour that off first. Enjoy!

About DISCARDED COWBOYS:

As the newest headliner at Hot Pink, Brandi Lyn Cherry gets paid well to dance, though not enough to enjoy it. When sexy cowboy Marcus arrives, however, she’s hot and ready to give him her best private show. He doesn’t want to pay her to dance, though. He wants to pay her to stop.

His possessiveness is almost as intriguing as his other love interest, Seth—a cowboy who’s as sexy and male as Marcus himself. Their allure is unavoidable, and discovering both are werewolves from Shay Falls’ most infamous pack drags her into a world far darker and more erotic than the one she left behind. But when their alpha, Kade, comes for Brandi to exact a price on the wolves for disobeying his prime command, all three of them are in danger of losing far more than their secrets—and their hearts.

Excerpt:

Conversation ceased, and all the men looked at one another. The distant cry of a lone wolf pierced the silent pause, and four heads whipped around in alarm.

“It’s him,” Caleb said. “I’m leavin’. Best you all do the same.”

Brandi thought her befuddlement over the bizarre discussion couldn’t get any worse. When the man claiming he was about to leave peeled his T-shirt over his head and unzipped his pants, however, her confusion sharpened. What the hell was going on?

The man began to quiver with an odd vibration that didn’t quite seem explainable by the cool mountain air. While she stared in amazement, hair shot out over his body, and he hunched over unnaturally. Impossibly. With the pop of resettling joints, the man-shape contorted and dropped down on all fours. Within moments, a pile of clothing on the ground was all that remained of the cowboy. A grayish-brown wolf stood in his place.

She barely managed to stifle the gasp that followed but fell backward and hit the dirt square on her ass. The wolf’s head snapped around at the sound of the muffled thud, sniffing the air.

It saw her.

The wolf snarled and crept toward her, its head lowered and eyes glowing menacingly. Those eyes! They were lit by the same golden fire shared by all the men who were now sweeping the area behind the Dumpster.

“Shit,” the short one said. “Got ourselves a fuckin’ eavesdropper.”

“Oh, God,” she murmured, unable to get to her feet. The wolf was closing distance rapidly. She scooted back on her hands and ass, feeling pebbles dig painfully into her skin. Why had she come out here? So much for trusting her instincts.

“Leave her alone,” Marcus said with an authoritative air. The wolf paused but bared its fangs at her.

“But she saw,” the short man said, sneering at her almost as angrily as the wolf in front of her.

Marcus stepped forward until he was beside the animal. “It’s all right. She’s with me.”

He leaned down to offer her his hand, and after a moment, she took it.

“You mean she’s…” the squatter man started, trailing off when Seth shot him a warning look.

Marcus’s hand was blessedly warm, as was he when he drew her tightly beside him and turned to face the others. Nevertheless, a chill swept over her at what she’d just seen.

“Oh, Jesus,” she whispered, shaking harder.

Marcus must have felt her shiver, because he looked down at the skimpy bikini the other men—and a wolf—were all openly staring at and swore under his breath. He let go of her and began unbuttoning his shirt. Her eyes opened wide in question when he tugged it off to reveal a mouth-watering chest. He settled his shirt, which was toasty with his body heat, around her shoulders.

“Thanks,” she managed, holding the fabric closed in front of her. She was used to men staring at her, of course—that was what she got paid for. Still, these eyes were too damn unsettling.

“You okay?” he asked.

She shook her head. “Not even a little okay. What just happened?”

“Isn’t it obvious, darlin’?” His eyes were glowing brighter now than the moon overhead. “We’re werewolves.”

She would have laughed, if not for the animal three feet away. “Werewolves. As in ‘of London.’”

He made a face. “More like shape-shifters than shaggy men with bad teeth, but you get the idea.”

“‘We’ are?” She glanced around at their searing and oh-so-similar stares. “So that’s how you’re related. How do you even exist?”

“I hate to interrupt this touchin’ moment,” the short man said, “but we need to get the fuck up on out of here before Kade shows. But I have my concerns about leavin’ the filly here with our secret.”

“I told you, she’s with me,” Marcus shot back, and something about the way he said “with” shifted some glances back and forth. No doubt he was giving them all the wrong impression about their relationship. Still, she could give a shit what he claimed was between them, if that meant the wolf-things would leave her alone.

Meanwhile, Seth’s eyes were everywhere on her, and she kept tossing nervous glances at him. She had to admit he was damn handsome, though in a different way than Marcus. Why the gorgeous ones were always gay was beyond her understanding. Then again, the way he and Marcus looked at her was anything but platonic. Her head was beginning to hurt just trying to make sense of everything.

Without another word, the squat cowboy tugged off boots and shirt. She knew what was coming, tensed for it, but still gasped when his body began to ripple and contort. His wolf was a darker brown than Caleb’s, and not surprisingly, more compact. After one final look at her and each other, the two wolves picked up their cowboy hats with their teeth and sprinted away, disappearing into the line of trees along the edge of the alley.

That left her alone with Marcus and Seth, one of whom was rubbing a large hand along her arm while the other devoured every inch of her with a hungry yet oddly conflicted look. A man with that much restrained lust would be worth a hundred bucks inside the club, easy. Yet the glimmer of yellow in his eyes whispered to her that he wasn’t a man, not in the strictest sense. She was in the presence of supernatural beings. Creatures of night. And maybe he wasn’t lusting after her. Maybe he just hadn’t eaten yet.
