On Sundays, I share tidbits of my works in progress as part of Weekend Warrior’s 8-Sentence Sunday.
This week, I'm going over edits from my publisher on DISORDERDLY COWBOYS, book 6 of the Lone Wolves of Shay Falls series. The heroine, Lana, talks to a visitor who is bearing some news they are reluctant to divulge.
“So why did you come back, really?” Lana asked.
“I wasn’t going to,” Jayel replied, “but I kept thinking of you being all alone in this cabin, and I’d feel responsible if something happened and I didn’t warn you.”
Coffee gurgled unpleasantly in Lana’s stomach. “Warn me about what?”
Jayel stared into her mug. “Maybe booze isn’t such a bad idea.”
“You’re starting to freak me out, Jayel. Warn me about what?”

"Yeah, Jayel...warn her about what?" This is what I'd say if I was in the story. Great dialogue exchange and I wonder what it is that he's warning her about. Good 8!
ReplyDeleteOMG, skirting around the issue makes it worse. Just say it!! Oy. Nice tension building.
ReplyDeleteUh oh, very tense and leaves me right on the edge of my chair. Excellent excerpt!
ReplyDeleteStarting to freak me out too!
ReplyDeleteI felt the tension in this dialogue. Good job. Now I'm wondering why Jayel doesn't just spit it out. Must be disturbing news. It sounds like Lana isn't going to like what he has to say.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Millie--he's worrying me a bit, too. It's never a good thing when someone has something to tell you... only they really don't want to say it.
ReplyDeleteHe's worried about her reaction, but why? So many questions... :)
