For this week's snippet...
Last time, Archipellus, the god of Samhain, was beginning the sabbat ritual by honing in on a female who was close to passing to the underworld. We finished with: “That whisper was a siren song, calling out for release by the god of death. He would answer.”
Let's pick up a short time later, when we meet our heroine. Archipellus has selected a woman near death and has appeared in her hospital room to make her an offer: join with him in a carnal ritual that will relieve her suffering and help her cross over peacefully. In return, he will gain the energy he needs to seal the veil and spare both their worlds. The woman agrees...

The monster Archipellus held at bay all year rose, quickening his heartbeat, demanding that he claim the frail woman hard and fast in order to drain her strength into himself. Beads of sweat broke out on his forehead as he forced himself to remain composed, a task so consuming that he didn’t register the squeak of the door opening. The privacy curtain yanked back before he could hide himself, and there stood the woman from the bedside photo, her mouth wide open and murderous fire blazing in compelling blue-green eyes.
“What in the hell are you doing to my sister?” she cried.
He was on her in a heartbeat, clamping a hand over her mouth. “Silence yourself before you attract attention.”
She squirmed against him, which didn't help his urgent condition in the slightest until she bit into his palm and shoved him away. She raced to her sister’s bedside and threw herself over her.
“It’s not her time, demon. Get out.”

...What do you think?
How can he hope to embrace love when his very touch brings death?
Archipellus thinks he alone is immune to the romantic power that has overtaken his sabbat brothers, for an incubus who drains partners during sex could never find happiness with a mortal woman. Then he meets Melissa, a woman willing to brave the danger of his erotic touch in hopes that his power might also cure her sister. When their passion tears a hole in the veil between worlds, Archipellus will embark on a quest to seal the breach and rescue the sister who was snatched and taken across the rift.

I was ready to say, "Ew!" but then sister came to the rescue. Awesome, intense snippet. We'll miss you- come back soon!
ReplyDeleteHa!! Thanks...I will only be off for a couple weeks to finish NaNo prep. Then hopefully snippets will abound for my NaNo project!
DeleteVery intense scene and then the sister. Quite wonderful, Rose. My best to you.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
DeleteWell, that didn't go as planned. I'm glad her sister came to her rescue. :) All the best with NaNoWriMo!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I'm looking forward to it.
DeleteAs the others said, very intense. I hope you do well with NaNo. See you later.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'll be posting snippets in November.
DeleteAll the best for November, Rose.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with everyone. The piece is very intense. Nicely done!
Thank you for that feedback!
DeleteLots of powerful emotions in this piece. The sister's response, while admirable, might not be smart (though I suspect it will turn out all right).
ReplyDeleteMore reactionary than smart, agreed...we'll see how it works out.
DeleteFilled with passions. There could be trouble if he doesn't stop though
ReplyDeleteDefinitely true!
DeleteShe's a brave woman.
ReplyDeleteLoyal to her sister, to be sure!
DeleteWhat a powerful scene! It makes me want to know more.
ReplyDeleteIntense scene. Well done. Congrats on finishing!!!
ReplyDeleteIt might not be her time, but she did agree to the bargain... not that the sister knows that!
ReplyDeleteThis was intense! Congrats on completion and the upcoming release! Very exciting!
ReplyDeleteSilly mortals, trying to make decisions about another's life. I hope her sister tells her to back off.
ReplyDeleteWell that's a pickle! She's either a brave woman, or a closed-minded woman. Really, if her sister is ready to go, she needs to let her, no matter how hard it is.
ReplyDeleteWow, what an intense scene! And congrats on the new release.

I really liked the way the sister stood up to him. At first I wasn't sure she knew who he was so when she addressed him it startled and pleaed me. Great snippet.
ReplyDeleteHave fun gearing up for Nanwrimo
