I'm taking part in Weekend Writing Warrior’s  Snippet Sunday, currently reworking Book 2 of my Sons of Herne novella series (synopsis below the snippet), titled
 Awakening of Brighid.
Last time, Eradimus, god of Imbolc, was told by his father Herne and the counsel to abandon his true love, Brighid, and take a lover to fulfill his sabbat duties. We left off with his father saying,
"Admit you have lost Brighid to the ages, take your balls in your hand, and fix this--tonight." Let's take up a few sentences later:

They wanted him to forget the only woman he had ever loved and take another lover by sunrise, in hopes Earth wouldn’t notice the difference between an act of copulation and a love that had endured since the days of old.
“My lords!”
Eradimus and the rest turned to see a young acolyte racing forward, his sandals slapping the marble as he ran.
“Well, what is it?” Herne boomed. “Now that you’ve interrupted a vital discussion and startled us all into apoplexy.”
The young man slid to a stop, barely offering a hasty bow before blurting, “This was just brought back through the veil.” His brown eyes wide with excitement, he held up a flower that quivered between his fingers.
“Snowdrops,” Eradimus whispered, his heart giving a wild sputter.
“It is a sign,” Jarvil said, pointing at the blossom. “She is returning!”

About The Sons of Herne:

The god Herne has appointed eight of his most virile, headstrong sons as keepers of the pagan holidays. To honor their sabbat, each must join with a mortal female in a ritual to maintain the balance between worlds.
It is the year of The Thousand Seasons, and the Fates have secretly conspired to mark the end of an era by granting the gods one thing they lack--a true union of male and female that will last beyond the passion of a sabbat joining.
Herne’s sons will wrestle with the conflict between sacred duty and their own yearnings, a struggle will not only challenge their beliefs, but may threaten the success of rituals that must be observed lest the mortal and immortal worlds collide in chaos.

Book 1 of the series, Season of Light, is now available on Amazon!

Fix This Tonight -Snippet Sunday

I'm taking part in Weekend Writing Warrior’s  Snippet Sunday. I'm working on my Sons of Herne novella series (synopsis below the snippet).
I've been reworking Book 2, Awakening of Brighid.
Last time, Eradimus argued with his father over the fact that he was still awaiting his love to come to him for the sabbat ritual despite there being no sign of her return. The debate has gone on for another few sentences, and now the counsel weighs in on what should be done.

“If your woman does not return to you before sunrise,” Counselor Veramus said, “you must join with another.”
“Unlike my brothers,” Eradimus said, I cannot simply bed any woman who happens by on the sabbat and convince the Earth that ours is a race worth saving.”
Their race,” Herne said, “as humans have brought this fate on their own heads.”
“And as you have frequently reminded me, Father, I am half human.”
“Then find another to avoid this fate, and quickly,” said Counselor Sandovar. “Surely you’ve taken other lovers during the nineteen-year intervals between Brighid’s returns?”
“I have not, and I will not.”

Herne lifted his staff and brought the base of it down on the marble, the force of the strike echoing through the chamber and cracking the tile. “The fate of the worlds can no longer hang on the heartstrings of an idealistic young lad. Admit you have lost Brighid to the ages, take your balls in your hand, and fix this—tonight.”

The Normal Reach of Sanity -Snippet Sunday

12:00 AM 11 Comments

I'm taking part in Weekend Writing Warrior’s  Snippet Sunday. I'm working on my Sons of Herne novella series (see synopsis below the snippet).
Last week, I posted a snippet from Book 4, Fire of Beltane. I'll be setting that aside temporarily as I went back to expand and rework Book 2, Awakening of Brighid, which comes out next month.
The snippet: Eradimus, god of Imbolc, is with his father Herne and the Counsel of Sabbats, discussing the fact that his love, Brighid, shows no signs of returning to him in time to undertake the sabbat ritual that will tame the storms blanketing the Earth.

Herne’s nostrils flared. “It is my son’s magic that no longer holds the Earth in sway, but then, nothing is destined to last forever, is it? Especially not a spark of love declared in a moment of young, desperate passion.”
Eradimus’s throat thickened. “It has lasted far longer than you have predicted—and it still endures.”
“Then where is she, this lover you defied a god to pursue, yet who shows no sign of returning in time for the sabbat?”
Fists clenched at Eradimus’s sides. “There would be no need to await her return if you hadn’t doomed us to be parted in the first place.”

“Trust me, one year out of twenty has extended your love far beyond the normal reach of sanity. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”

Angels Don't Ride the Subway -Snippet Sunday

12:00 AM 10 Comments

I'm taking part in Weekend Writing Warrior’s  Snippet Sunday. I'm working on my Sons of Herne novella series (see synopsis below the snippet).
Last week, Jorandil, god of Beltane, called forth the fire of Beltane in preparation of the sabbat. Let's skip ahead a ways and meet Cadence, a college student who has just rushed onto the subway not long after a late-night encounter with an angel who rocked her world--and then vanished.

Cadence shoved back the hood of her jacket and pulled the textbook from her threadbare backpack, reviewing the last chapter and her notes before her final. Rain water dripped from her bangs onto the page of the text, and she blotted at it with a frown.
“Organic chemistry gave me that exact same expression,” a male voice said, “not to mention nightmares about all the biological hazards in our environment.”

She glanced up and caught a damp sheen of long, pale hair, and she snapped her head up for a double take at the stranger seated across from her. Her heart gave a skip until she saw that it wasn’t Jorandil’s silvery locks nor his piercing gray eyes. Why would she expect otherwise? Angels didn’t ride the subway. And the lilting, old world way he spoke had made it clear he wasn’t from anywhere near the deteriorating cement jungle she called home. For now, at least, until she could get her degree, spread wings of her own, and fly off to wherever she wanted.
