DISOWNED COWBOYS By J. Rose Allister
Book 1 of Lone Wolves of Shay Falls
Erotic | BDSM | M/M,M/F,M/M/F|
http://bookstrand.com/disowned-cowboys

About the LONE WOLVES series:

They were cowboys torn from their livelihood after a fateful bite changed their destinies forever. When their pack is disbanded by a new alpha, the lone wolves are forced to roam the woods of Shay Falls with no way to return to the ranch life they once knew. Each must find a male pack mate of their own—and a female mate to hold that bond together.

Werewolves love fierce and forever—and their very control over the full moon can be influenced by indulging hot, raw passion. But between their secrets, hardships and a huntress with a mind for revenge, finding their way to romance and redemption may prove a rougher ride than wild nights spent taming full moon urges.

About DISOWNED COWBOYS:

When Aimee gets lost during a hike, she finds more than refuge in a dark cave—she finds a chained and naked cowboy who claims to know who she is. Dillon and his partner, Kyle, are werewolves determined to become her mates. Just one problem—she shows up for her appointment with fate while wearing another man’s engagement ring.

The wolves will shamelessly pursue her, using every seductive trick in a cowboy’s book to rope their mate. But even the combined desire of two insatiably virile werewolves may not be enough when Aimee’s boss-slash-fiancĂ© and Kyle’s pack mates show up to challenge Dillon and Kyle’s right to claim the woman they have dreamed of—and to each other.

About DOMINUS: GOD OF YULE:
the first in a series of erotic romantic fantasy novellas

Loving Lorayna could cost him his sacred power...
It is the time of Yule, and Dominus, god of the sabbat, should never have had to spend half the year nurturing the latest light bearer himself. Now, months of visiting Lorayna, present only as a whisper, has sparked a yearning inside of him that he cannot shake.

Lorayna has felt herself drawn to the pagan path by a presence she has been unable to resist. When she discovers her “holiday spirit” is in fact a mouthwateringly sexy god, she’s ready for whatever sabbat ritual he chooses. To her disappointment, his intentions are strictly hands-off.

Giving up her light is not as easy as surrendering to his will, however. Dominus is forced to break the rules and give into his urges before the Yule power consumes her from within. The ripples of their passion will alter many sabbat unions to come—and Dominus must defy his father, Herne, to follow his desires and prove to Lorayna that she was not merely another light bearer.

Falling for Him -Snippet Sunday

12:00 AM 30 Comments
It's Snippet Sunday, time for my Weekend Writing Warriors'  blog hop!

Boy, I was on the run all this week! Magic of Midsummer came out, and I found out that my publisher put Disarming Cowboys (Lone Wolves 7) up on preorder, yay! Ooh, and I've got a sneaky sign up announcement for you after the snippet.

Here's another peek at Bound to Her Master (synopsis follows the snippet), my planned 3-book erotic fantasy/romance

Last time, Ti-Hana, an earth girl posing as the sex slave of god and arising ruler Lord Stepanyan, had been talking to her midwife about her Master...and had expressed concern that the maidservants hadn't arrived to help her get ready for her next session with him. We finished with:

“You seem in a hurry to be in his arms again,” Carana said, her eyes narrow. A most dangerous dangerous prospect.”

Let's pick up with Ti-Hana's reply...

Ti-Hana shrugged and turned away from the window. “I assume that by dangerous, you mean that if I’m late it would displease my Master.”
Carana blocked her path, taking hold of her chin while staring at her intently. “Tread carefully, Ti-Hana. Your motives will serve you ill.”
Ti-Hana broke eye contact and pulled away. “I don't know what you're talking about—stranger in this land, remember?”
“You are no stranger to this. It is clear enough from your words, as well as the impatient, distracted way you have been flitting about and humming to yourself. You are falling for him.”

*
Is she? What do you think?

About Bound to Her Master:
Pregnant and on the run, Maddie races away from one set of problems only to plunge through a portal to another land. In the seventh realm, breathtakingly gorgeous demigods embrace ancient traditions of Dominance and sexual slavery...and she is about to become Ti-Hana, the most sought-after captive of all.

Stepanyan is in his time of ascension, ready to claim his father's place as ruler of the high seat. When his rival for the realm tries to claim a lost, pregnant human wandering in the Shogran, Stepanyan swoops the fiery beauty out from under him. He has no desire for a pleasure slave, but keeping Vo'Dan from getting what he wants is too great a temptation to ignore. No matter that Stepanyan's father banned pleasure slaves from his house decades before. Or that taking on a subservient is the last distraction he needs as he faces the trials of ascension.

She was saved from drowning by an act of god…a seductive, smoking hot god.

It is the time of Litha, and Devinmar, god of the sabbat, will rise from the sea to mate with a human female and unleash the powers of the deep. His visit to shore comes a day early, however, when he saves a stunning beauty from drowning under suspicious circumstances.

Hallie wakes up on a beach after being rescued by the most exotically gorgeous man she has ever seen. Believing Devinmar is an exceptional hunk of male is no stretch, but falling for his stories about selkie legends and pagan gods is something else. Still, she can’t help but give into the temptation of a sea god whose long hair, exquisite beauty, and intense stare beckons.

When Devinmar returns to make Hallie his sabbat consort, he discovers she has been taken by those responsible for her near drowning. Getting her back could mean failing in his duty to the sabbat, but he goes after her nevertheless. He’ll use the powers of the deep to make her safe again—even knowing that once their midsummer’s night has ended, he will be forced to leave her behind and return to the sea.

Excerpt:

A weight slammed into the surface of the water, square onto Devinmar’s back. He spun out of the boat’s path with the dolphin equivalent of a surprised cry, and the large bulk that had collided with him fell away into the darkness. Stunned as he was, Devinmar floated for a short time, getting his bearings.
What the devil was that? He poked his head above water, blowing out his air hole and watching the white boat disappear in a tumult of churning sea foam. They had lost something important, judging by the size, but the boat gave no indication of turning back. The item perhaps had no value.
Or maybe they had dumped it on purpose.
Curious and a bit outraged at the thought, he dove back underwater, shooting straight down after the abandoned item. His dolphin eyes were not acute enough to see that far, but sounding ahead with sonar turned up a startling fact, one that sped his heart. He tried sonar again, confirming his theory.
The bundle was human.
Devinmar dove faster, his powerful muscles straining to catch up with the sinking human. It was a female, unconscious, and bound with some sort of wide, flat rope. No. Tape. He tried twice to get hold of her with his broad mouth, both cursing his current form and feeling grateful for it. God or not, he would never get her to the surface as a man, but hands would have been helpful. He caught hold of her with a firm grip and rose, pulling her against the forces of nature, higher until he could see the light rippling at the ocean surface. They broke through, him with a fierce blast from his blow hole. The woman made no gasping sounds. He had little time, if in fact it wasn’t too late already. Alternating between using his snout and teeth to keep her head above the whitecaps as much as possible, he pressed for the shore. His jaw ached from dragging her to the surface over and over, but he hurried on, intent on saving her.
Waves soon pointed the way to land, and he followed until the first of the breakers pushed their bodies to shore. He gripped her in his teeth and rode the wave. The ocean floor beneath them rose up sharply, threatening to beach the dolphin if he had no other means to save himself. But he did.
He didn’t let go of the female until sand scratched his underside, and he closed his eyes, released her to the momentary trust of the tide, and concentrated on the change. He had to become the seal first, the form his mother’s kind preferred close to the shore, a creature adapted to both sea and land. Shiny, gray skin shifted to brown fur, fins to large flippers. His snout shortened and sprouted whiskers while his body grew slower, yet more buoyant.
Insistent waves pushed him to shore, and the female washed up beside him. The sudden cessation of the ocean’s constant movement brought him awake, as though jarred from a dream back to reality. She lay limp beside him, so fragile and helpless that it sent pangs of frustration through him.
Now he focused on his true self, the man whose form he took but once a year, a human figure born under the sea with arms and legs and long, black hair. His seal skin split with a pop along his back, which was not a painful experience, but rather, a freeing one that ran oddly counter to his personal opinion. He was released from the marine creature, climbing free from the skin he clutched in his human hand. He must keep the skin with him in order to return to the sea.
He tossed the skin higher up the beach, away from the waves that might try to reclaim it. Then he dragged the bound woman higher up the beach.
He tried to get on his feet, but wobbly sea legs buckled beneath him. He crawled along as he got her out of the waves, then pushed wet hair from her pale face and put his cheek down to her mouth. She wasn’t breathing.
Devinmar’s throat tightened. He slapped her face, not really expecting a response, then covered her mouth with his. He breathed, willing life back into her. Nothing.
The tape around her chest might be constricting her, so he tugged and ripped at it until it tore free. He put the heel of his hand on her sternum and pushed, hoping to expel water, then breathed into her again.
“Come on,” he said, water dripping from his hair onto her face. “You must live.”

My First (Naughty) Fairy Tale-Throwback Thursday

12:00 AM 0 Comments

On select Thursdays, I like to share a throwback to past writing, trailers, or randomness about me and writing life.

Submissions calls often intrigue me. Several of my books came about because of them.  In 2008, the small pub worked for put out a call for their "twisted" (i.e. naughty) fairy tale anthology. The possibilities started spinning, and I hit on the idea of a paranormal Cinderella.

Sindarella was not only my first erotic short, but also my first anthology AND my first piece to be reviewed by a major publication. Romantic Times Reviews said Sindarella "stands out above the rest." I should frame that and hang it over my writing space.

The idea of fairy tales gone wild must have held special appeal, as I went on to write another Cinderella paranormal, a novella involving werewolves instead of vampires. (Sinful Ella and the Wolf)

After right were returned on the anthology, I released Sindarella separately (and just gave it a snazzy new cover and a fresh revision). It's available on Amazon, Smashwords, and Barnes and Noble. Be forewarned, my "hot shorts" short fiction collection is known to be even hotter and more scandalous than my full length erotic romance!

Sindarella
by J. Rose Allister
Not your grandmother's fairy tale...

Hot vampire Sinda gets off at the royal ball! Sinda Ella has a bone to pick with the stepsisters who trapped her and used dirty magic to bring the prince to his knees at the royal ball. An enchanted bite turns innocent Sinda into a wildly horny temptress, one who may prove more dangerous to Prince Verrill than the stepsisters she crashes the ball to warn him about.

Excerpt:

Mikkhail pulled a vial from his pocket, drinking a few drops. Then he murmured a few undecipherable words. “You asked of my power. I shall tell you.” He was within inches of me now, tall enough to raise my head to his gaze. “Then, I shall help you.”
“How?”
He pressed an icy finger to my lips. “I am not of this world. No longer mortal. This is my power.” He bent down, as if to press his lips to my neck. “The power to set you free.”
I swayed, my eyes fluttering at the sensual breeze stirring around us. His proximity burned through me. I wanted his kiss and much more. I meant to give him everything. The damp, leafy underbed would be where I divorced my maidenhood.
Then, something in his words struck, and I pushed him back. “How would I win my freedom, exactly?”
The smile returned. “By making you like me.” The smile widened and I saw them―two pointed teeth, one on either side.
I gasped.
“You cannot run,” he said, reading my obvious thoughts. “But your fate needn’t be eternal.”
Shivering, I hugged myself and tried to inch backward. “What do you mean?”
“As I said, I know of the craft. I was once a witch. So I can offer you what has never been.” He held up the vial. “An enchanted bite. I will end your mortal life for one night. Cross the barrier and relieve your sisters of their prince. Come morning, all will return as it was.”
I could barely take the words in. “I would be human again?”
He nodded.
That his offer sounded too good to refuse spoke well of my state of being on this day.
“Your sort isn’t known for kindness,” I ventured. “What is your gain?”
His laugh pierced my core. “I should think that obvious.” He leaned close, his eyes rolling back as he inhaled my scent. “The blood of a maiden.”

A Most Dangerous Prospect -Snippet Sunday

12:00 AM 22 Comments
It's Snippet Sunday, time for my Weekend Writing Warriors'  blog hop!

I got some work done on Bound to Her Master, which is looking to be a 3-book erotic fantasy/romance (and a spinoff of my Immortal Paradise series.) Synopsis follows the snippet. It's been many months since I posted a snippet from this one, so let's start fresh.

Ti-Hana, a pregnant earth girl who falls into an arrangement to "pose" as the sex slave of god and arising ruler Lord Stepanyan, is speaking with her midwife. Carana has just told her of the trials of ascension, a series of tests being faced by Ti-Hana's Master.  Failure could allow his (and Ti-Hana's) nemesis to claim the high seat instead. Ti-Hana wants Stepanyan to win, of course, but Carana assumes it's because it would elevate Ti-Hana's personal standing as a slave. We pick up with Ti-Hana's reply...

“I’m not interested in how Lord Stepanyan’s ascension would help my personal standing,” Ti-Hana said, stroking her abdomen to calm the baby’s restless wriggling.
Carana returned Ti-Hana’s teacup to the serving tray. “Then you would be a rare slave indeed. Some are more devious and power-grabbing than the nobles they serve.”
“I don’t care about status, I just want his happiness.” She watched the light dimming in the purple-orange sky, and she turned with a frown. “Shouldn’t Matron be here by now? I have to get ready for tonight’s session with my Master.”
“You seem in a hurry to be in his arms again,” Carana said, her eyes narrow. A most dangerous dangerous prospect.”

Dangerous? Hm. What do you think?

Writing Realistic, Well-Rounded Characters by Julie Shelton

12:00 AM 1 Comments
On Select Wednesdays, I post tips and strategies for writers. Today, I'm pleased to have guest author Julie Shelton, who is here to share some writing strategies that have helped her gain acclaim for her BDSM fiction. (#5 and #7 are big take-aways for me! )

Her latest title, Passion's Magic, is the fourth in her Doms of Passion Lake series. Speaking of taking it away...here's Julie!

WRITING TIPS
by Julie Shelton
One of the things my writing has been universally praised for is the realism of my characters and dialogue. So I will be sharing a few tips on creating realistic, well-rounded characters and writing realistic dialogue.

1.      Before you start writing the actual story, jot down notes about each of your characters. Something more than just the color of their eyes or hair, although that’s important, too, especially if your characters are going to show up in more than one book. Write down things that have happened to them that have made them the way they are. Get to know them before you introduce them to your readers. When I first thought of Jesse Colter, my hero in the three Sarah books, all I had was a name. Over the next four months I created his whole persona, what he looked like, what his background was, how he walked, how he talked. But even though I had complete control over Jesse and felt that I knew him inside and out, he still managed to surprise me. By the time I started writing the first words about him in the actual book, I suddenly found myself typing “son of an alcoholic father and a Native American woman who abandoned him at birth.” Nowhere in my original profile of him was he Native American. Nor had I known that his mother had abandoned him at birth. But I went with it, because that one detail just all of a sudden explained certain aspects of his appearance, personality, and behavior. So know your characters, but be aware that they can still surprise you. And if they do, let them. They have a habit of knowing what’s best for them and taking over from time to time.

2. Mention the most important things that have affected how they live their daily lives at least three times during the course of the story, but don’t just list them. And don’t keep mentioning the same details from one retelling to another. Add new information. Leave other bits out. In one instance, you might describe the characters thinking about a particular event, how they felt when the event happened, what they did as a result of the event, and how it has affected their decision-making processes and the impact it has had on their lives. In another instance, have the character tell all these things to another character, but don’t just make it one long narrative. Show how the teller reacts as he/she is telling the story. And how the listener reacts as well. Have the listener asks questions, make comments. Another time you might consider recounting the entire scene or series of events in a dream or a flashback. By the time the last mention of the event has occurred, allow it to be an example of how much the character has grown by contrasting how he/she reacted to the event when it happened and how differently he/she is reacting to it now.

3. Listen to the way real people talk. They rarely speak entirely in complete sentences. They use slang. Use the way a character talks to help define him as a person. For instance one of his personality traits could be that he always uses big words and sounds very professorial. Or uses the latest street slang. But be consistent. Don’t just have him talk that way once or twice, but every time he opens his mouth.

4. Don’t add “he said” or “she said” after every sentence. Instead put an action in its place. Something that avoids the over-use of adverbs. Something that helps reveal how the character is feeling or what he is thinking without actually saying what he/she is feeling or thinking. For instance, instead of this:
“I have plans for you,” he said teasingly. “Plans you will like.”
“What are they?” she asked nervously.
“Don’t worry. You’ll find out soon enough,” he said cryptically.

Try something like this:
“I have plans for you. Plans you’ll like.”
“Oh, yeah?” She gulped as her stomach started to twist into knots. “What are they?”
He gave her a wolfish grin. “Oh, I wouldn’t worry my pretty little head about that. You’ll find out soon enough.”

In the second example it’s still clear who is speaking and you are also showing their state of mind without the over-use of adverbs or “he/she said”. It also shows that he is playful and likes to tease and she is more serious, and it reveals that without actually saying in so many words that he is playful and likes to tease and she is more serious.

5. Like all writers, I get writers block. I have two ways to work through it. I go back and edit the previous day’s work, which is usually all I need to do to get back into the swing of the scene. I always try to end in a place where I know what’s going to happen next so I can pick it right up the next day. But that’s not always possible. If I’m really stumped, I have a wonderful beta reader and critique partner with whom I can brainstorm ideas. We email them back and forth and all those emails get copied and pasted into an idea file for each book. We’ve come up with a lot of really wild things, some of which have actually made it into my books. But it always gets my creative juices flowing enough to at least give me a place to start and I can usually take it from there. Brainstorming is an invaluable tool for me.

6. A lot of my characters are southern, so they drop their g’s at the end of most words, like askin’ instead of asking, goin’ instead of going, etc. They also say gonna, wanna, and y’all. That’s the way we southerners talk, so I use phonetic spelling for a lot of their dialogue. But only in their dialogue. Not in the narrative part of the book. It makes for a more realistic portrayal of each character if they say “dontcha wanna go?” instead of “don’t you want to go?” Or when someone says “Have a nice day,” it’s much more realistic to have your southern cowboy reply, “Right back atcha, sugar,” rather than “Right back at you, miss.”

7. If a scene really isn’t going well, to back to where it began and take the character in another direction. Say, for instance, a character who is brooding over some problem fixes her lunch and eats it alone at her kitchen counter, while trying to come up with a solution to the problem. If that’s not working for you, have her decide she needs a change of scene. Have her go out for lunch and meet up with a girlfriend who insists on knowing what the problem is and who provides suggestions for how to solve it. Not only is this a much livelier scene, but it also adds dialogue, as opposed to being straight exposition. But don’t delete the original scene. Put it into the idea file or a deleted scenes file. What doesn’t work for this particular character in this particular book might be just the thing for another character in another book.

These are just a few tips that might get you looking at things in your own books and seeing different ways of approaching them. Have fun and Happy Writing!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

From fairies in the garden to handcuffs in the boudoir, Julie’s writing has run the gamut. In between she managed to graduate cum laude with a B.A. in French from Georgia State University followed by a Master’s Degree in Library Science from Emory University. Having thus procured these two necessary but ultimately irrelevant pieces of paper, she launched a successful career as a children’s librarian, followed by an even more successful career as a professional storyteller and puppeteer. She published Kidstuff, an award-winning, monthly newsletter, as well as Puppets, Poems and Songs, both major language arts resource for early childhood educators.

At various points in her life, if asked what she would like to be, her answer would have been (in rough chronological order, since some of these lofty ambitions overlapped): a fairy, a princess, a ballerina, Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames, a paleontologist, Scarlett O’Hara, thin and beautiful, an actress, and a writer. Now, at age 73, her answer to that question would most likely be, “younger”.

Followed closely, of course by a writer. Oh, and a princess. Some dreams die hard.
Now retired, Julie lives in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia.

Safe With Him -Snippet Sunday

12:00 AM 35 Comments
It's Snippet Sunday, a Weekend Writing Warriors'  blog hop!

This will be the last snippet for now on Book 5 of my Sons of Herne series, Magic of Midsummer (synopsis follows the snippet). I finished edits on it. Next week, I'll be working on my three-book saga Bound to Her Master.

Last time, Devinmar, shape-shifting god of Litha, had pulled a woman from the ocean and reverted to human form in an attempt to revive her. We ended with:

“Come on,” he said, water dripping from his hair onto her face. “You must live.”

I couldn't just leave things hanging there before moving onto another WIP, so let's pick up from there...

The fourth round of compressing her chest sent a gurgling sound up her throat, and water spurted out in a fit of coughing. She heaved, and he helped her roll to her side to spew up the remaining sea water.
She collapsed onto her back, sucking in deep, ragged breaths, still coughing on occasion. Devinmar was on all fours over her, his brows tight as he moved to address the tape securing her arms and legs. Her eyes were the brilliant blue of a morning sky, with delicate features and a lithe figure that was well-curved where it mattered. He hadn’t paid much attention while he’d had his hands on them to save her life, but now it was difficult not to be aware that he’d spared a most attractive female.
“Who are you?” she rasped, wriggling her body in a panic against the tape still wound around her wrists and ankles.
“It’s all right,” he said, tugging at her bonds. “You’re safe now.”
She stared up at him with those incredible eyes, but they glassed over when she lost consciousness again.

What do you think?

About Magic of Midsummer

Hallie wakes up on a beach to find she has been rescued from near-drowning by the most exotically gorgeous--and breathtakingly naked--man she has ever seen. Believing that Devinmar is exceptional is no stretch at all, but falling for his stories about selkie legends and pagan gods is something else. Even if he is who he claims, what he wants from her is even more shocking. Should she give into the temptation of a one-night frolic with a sea god, whose long hair, exquisite beauty, and intense stare beckons her touch?

Yes. She should.

Devinmar will go to the darkest depths of the sea to gather the powers needed for his Litha ritual, all the while anticipating a night of wild passion with the woman who has stirred him like no other. When he arrives for their rendezvous to discover she has been taken, getting her back could mean missing the deadline for the sabbat--and giving up the energies needed to recharge his power. Still, Devinmar will do what he must to make Hallie safe again--even though he knows that once their midsummer night is spent, he must leave her behind and return to the sea.

About The Sons of Herne:

The god Herne has appointed eight of his most virile, headstrong sons as keepers of the pagan holidays. To honor their sabbat, each must join with a mortal female in a ritual to maintain the balance between worlds.

It is the year of The Thousand Seasons, and the Fates have secretly conspired to mark the end of an era by granting the gods one thing they lack--a true union of male and female that will last beyond the passion of a sabbat joining.

Herne’s sons will wrestle with the conflict between sacred duty and their own yearnings, a struggle will not only challenge their beliefs, but may threaten the success of rituals that must be observed lest the mortal and immortal worlds collide in chaos.
