Chained in a Barn -Snippet Sunday

Warning: snippet contains profanity

It's Snippet Sunday and my Weekend Writing Warriors'  blog hop!

I thought last week would be the last snippet from Disarming Cowboys, but since I was knee deep in edits for this one all week, I decided to post one more.
(Synopsis and series trailer below.)

Last time, Jayel had been captured by Solomon and his werewolf pack, and his handsome, but irritating beta, David, had given her a thorough pat-down to check for weapons. We finished with, “Hurry the hell up,” she snapped. “This isn’t a joyride.”

Let's skip ahead a few sentences, after the pack finished confiscating her weapons and she was taken to a ranch to be held hostage.

We pick up with the start of Chapter Two...

“Mama!”
The word flew out of Jayel’s mouth as she snapped awake from the dream. The old living room dissolved from view, leaving her inside a barn alone.
“Shit,” she whispered, sniffing back unwanted tears.
Shifting around brought a groan to her lips. She had drifted off while slumped between the barn wall and the metal post she was chained to, and now her neck was stiff and her ass protested hours of sitting on a thin layer of straw.
How long had she been asleep? Based on the chill in the air and the pale gray light filtering through the barn, she’d guess early morning. She’d stayed awake well into the night trying to get the chains off, but it had been no use. Her bruised wrists were slender, but not thin enough to slip the manacles.
She was tugging at them again when the sound of the barn door being shoved open silenced Jayel’s efforts, and she held her breath to listen.

About Disarming Cowboys:
Jayel has hunted werewolves since the night they killed her parents and turned her brother into one of them. Now, wolves from the pack who destroyed her life want her help—and some are willing to chain her up in order to get it. One of her annoyingly gorgeous captors, David, has an erotic, animal nature that gives her the shivers. And just her luck, when Jerrod, a sexy, white-hat hero, offers to rescue her, she discovers that he, too, is a werewolf. One of them can’t claim her fast enough, while the other will do his best to fight the insatiable instinct to make a werewolf killer his mate.

Unsettling urges stir in Jayel at the worst moment imaginable. Her long-ignored sex life should be the last thing on her mind, yet the very beings she vowed to hate have awakened her to the possibility of a life beyond revenge. But between an enemy making ultimatums on the allied packs, an unstable alpha who wants her head on a platter, and her own unfinished werewolf business, Jayel will face unforeseen consequences of her vengeance quest—and the results could end all hope of happiness with the wolves who can no longer live without her.

  11. I really like the contrast between calling her mama in her sleep and her waking attitude. And what a great cliffhanger, but you can't leave us hanging here! Please do one more snippet! :-)

Thanks for the feedback! Just had to slip in a hint of backstory and a glimpse of who she was--and still can be, under all the hard-nose sarcasm. :)

  13. The little dream snippet was quite revealing. She's not quite as tough as she let's on. But I still feel sorry for whoever is going to feel her wrath.

    1. Seems so, though it was more a matter of being prepared to restrain an out of control werewolf during the full moon rather than a feisty huntress. Still, the arrangement came in handy!

  17. She seems resourceful. If she can't slip out of the manacles, I bet she finds some other way to escape the pack. Exciting snippet!

  20. I wonder what the dream was about... Well, I'm at least glad to see she's a fighter and isn't going to just sit there, but instead try to free herself, despite how bruised it may make her wrists. But who's coming in now?! Great snippet!
