NaNo 2015: Snippet Sunday Edition 1

~~Today's snippet contains adult themes~~

I've preempted much of my blog musings this month to post daily updates from this year's NaNoWriMo challenge, but I'll still be taking part in Weekend Writing Warrior’s  Snippet Sunday.

My NaNo project is the Sons of Herne series, a set of interwoven novellas surrounding the pagan sabbats and the gods appointed to oversee them. At the moment, I'm working on the 3rd, Spirit of Spring.

In today's snippet, Harper is on a solo camping trip and has just finished bathing in a nearby lake.

“What the hell?” Harper said with a frown while she searched the area around her. But there was no sign of the towel or the clothing she was certain she’d brought.
Shivering and dripping water all the way, she raced back to camp and ducked inside her tent to dry off with her sleeping bag and throw on some other clothes. Just because she’d never encountered anyone in this part of the forest before didn’t mean she wasn’t vulnerable, and she stood listening for noises outside while scanning the tent for anything useful to defend herself with.
“I’m warning whoever is out there right now, I’m armed,” she called out, grabbing her over-sized flashlight.
Then again, it occurred to her that in this part of the woods, the more likely explanation was that an animal had run off with her clothes to line its den.
She relaxed and breathed a sigh, feeling foolish for her outburst.

“Fair enough,” she heard a man’s deep voice say. Her mouth fell open. “I surrender.”

What do you think?

About The Sons of Herne:

The god Herne has appointed eight of his most virile, headstrong sons as keepers of the pagan holidays. To honor their sabbat, each must join with a mortal female in a ritual to maintain the balance between worlds.
It is the year of The Thousand Seasons, and the Fates have secretly conspired to mark the end of an era by granting the gods one thing they lack--a true union of male and female that will last beyond the passion of a sabbat joining.
Herne’s sons will wrestle with the conflict between sacred duty and their own yearnings, a struggle will not only challenge their beliefs, but may threaten the success of rituals that must be observed lest the mortal and immortal worlds collide in chaos.

  1. Loved the scene! The way it ends, with the unseen man surrendering is fun, can't wait to see what happens next. Great snippet!

    1. Thank you! I was SO tempted to end the scene with this, but my switches occur with POV changes and I wasn't quite ready to leave hers yet.

    2. And then I changed my mind after writing this and ended the scene anyway. Ha!

  2. This is an intriguing meet-cute. It isn't obvious exactly what's going on, which makes me wonder. If this guy is polite and quick to "surrender", why would he take her clothes?

    1. Indeed...and might he be wondering the same thing?

  3. Somehow I don't think 'surrender' involves giving her those clothes back.

    Impressive word count! :)
