Debate with the Gods -Snippet Sunday

It's Snippet Sunday, a Weekend Writing Warriors'  blog hop!

Greetings! Feeling reinvigorated by my mountain writing retreat. I'm happy to say the WIP I've been posting from,  Feillor: God of Lammas, is being released in the next week.

Last time, Salina had appeared out of nowhere in the realm of the god Feillor. He spoke to the thin air, complaining that he wasn't amused by the human's sudden arrival. We ended with: “Do you always pray while naked?” he asked, and there was a faint whiff of humor in the tone. “Or did your clothing somehow stay on the other side?”

We pick up with her reply...

“I often go skyclad for rituals,” she replied, spreading her hands a bit to better cover herself. “And people call me Salina, by the way, since it rolls off the tongue easier than ‘she who prays naked.’”
“Rituals?” he asked, noticeably stiffening.
“Yes, especially ones that are this important.”
The next tour of her body was done with a different sort of regard. “Not as important as the one you just interrupted,” he said, and then he turned away.
“That’s debatable,” she said, biting her tongue when he whipped back around with a harsh glare.
“If you feel it appropriate to debate with the gods, it is little wonder none of them have answered. Now, do not speak anymore,” he went on, raising his scythe toward the heavens. “I must complete the ritual of first harvest, preferably before winter arrives.”

What do you think?

Feillor is preparing to bring in the first harvest before the celebration of Lammas, a task that has grown more deplorable considering humans no longer show respect for the old ways. He raises his scythe to cut the sacred wheat and nearly "harvests" a woman who appears out of nowhere. Sensing the Fates' meddling hand in the sudden arrival, he demands that they return Salina to earth. The Fates agree on one condition: he must go with her and stay in the mortal realm for three days.

Salina refuses to let a local developer destroy the precious woods where she conducts her most sacred pagan rituals. A prayer for guidance is interrupted when she is sent to the immortal world--almost straight into the blade of a horned god's scythe. She thought her prayers to Herne were being answered, but she learns that Feillor is actually Herne's son--and that he has little interest in the matters of humans. When he is zapped to Earth with her for three days, she decides to convince him that her cause is worth fighting for, and that not all humans deserve his scorn.

Feillor's ideals are challenged during his time with Salina, whose fiery beauty and passion for her cause stirs something he hadn't felt for far too long. Admitting the truth about his view on humans may open his heart to the witch who is quickly enchanting him. But between danger she faces and the Fates returning him to his realm at the exact wrong moment, an epiphany alone won't be enough to see her in his arms at last. He will have to put aside his mortal prejudice and act in the best interests of a race he thought he could no longer abide.

  1. I don't think she'll quietly step aside and let him complete the ritual. Great snippet.

  3. I love these two. They are both so strong-willed. Interesting to see what will happen when they finally listen to each other. :)

    1. Thank you! Those pesky, self-important gods though.

  5. Wasn't clear to me why his demeanor changed (but maybe I just need more caffeine LOL). But I'm enjoying the story and can't wait to see how this scene plays out.

    1. Ooh...caffeine!! Forgot to go make my coffee. LOL. He stiffened at the mention that she did rituals...seems as if he wasn't expecting that?

  6. I like that she doesn't seem intimidated by his godhood. BTW, 'stiffening" left me with naughty thoughts. ;)

    1. ::cackles wickedly:: Yeah, and as there will be plenty of that later, mayhap I may edit the reference here. :)

  7. I like the teasing animosity in their exchange and how it contrasts with the seriousness at the end.

    1. Feillor would like to think he's a good deal more serious than what sneaks out of him at times :)

  8. I don't think it's wise to argue with or antagonize the gods...

    1. Not usually! Especially one with a scythe in his hand.

  9. I am glad it wasn't just me who had a schoolgirl giggle over the use of the word stiffened, just after he found her naked in the field! I can foresee lots of cross exchanges between the two in their three days together.

  10. Since neither of you know what the other is doing, you could give them the possibility that it's an important ritual.
They're getting along like a house on fire. Fun to read!

  11. Arguing with a god isn't just blasphemous, it's stupid. I hope she recovers -- both her body and her dignityl

    1. Oh, could be she's just a tad more evenly matched for him than he'd like to think.

  12. Hehehe I think he's easily distracted. Great snippet, J. Rose. :)

  13. What do I think? It left a smile on my face. She's feisty! And he, much to his chagrin, has met his match! lol

  14. Love that he indeed sounds godly. She doesn't seem intimidated in the least. I'm intrigued to see how this pans out.

    1. Maybe just a little intimidated, but what's the fun in giving that away?

  15. They are equally paired, him regal and god-like, and she totally unimpressed by his arrogance and constant demands. I can't wait to see where this goes.

  17. I think it's appropriate to debate with anyone, especially with the gods. But he got a point, they need that harvest to go well.

  18. What a neat exchange. This just went on my TBR pile.

  19. Oh I am really loving the exchange between these two! Salina seems like she has some spunk and fire to her, and that shall make things interesting with a God. I want more of this story for sure.
